House Fly

  • Common, 6mm (0.25-inch) long, grayish-black insect known for carrying over 100 pathogens.
  • Major household and agricultural pests, transmitting bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella to food via feces and vomit.
  • Filth-breeding insects, moving between garbage, fecal matter, and human food.
  • Sponging mouthparts that can only ingest liquid; they liquefy solid food by regurgitating saliva on it.
  • Females lay over 1,000 eggs in decomposing organic matter, with a rapid life cycle from egg to adult often taking under 14 days.
  • Active during the day, resting near food sources (<5ft high) at night.
  • Live for 15–30 days, or up to 60 days in optimal conditions
  • Small house flies are not young flies; they are adults that had insufficient food during their larval stage.
  • Remove food sources, keep trash covered, clean garbage cans frequently and use screens to prevent entry.
